Towards a functional definition of Lingua Franca

The presentation aims to prompt reflection on the functionality of Lingua Francas. It is anchored in a model of language contact that draws on the dimensions of knowledge spaces, actor constellations, individualized language repertoires, broader language ecology and communication modes. I will propose to view LFs as the deployment of linguistic resources for specified interaction purposes and
within available modes of communication, in action constellations in which key actors possess distinct linguistic repertoires.
